Peach Smoothie – A Peachy Way to Start the Day

It may or may not surprise you to learn that peaches make the most divine smoothies.  After all peaches make great desserts, so why not a peach smoothie.  This sweet, juicy fruit is so good for you and ideal for throwing into your blender.  Like mangoes, peaches make an ideal smoothie base as they help bind all the ingredients together. Their sweet, subtle flavor blends well with bananas, raspberries and strawberries.Peaches originated in China and their scientific name, Prunus persica, hints at their travels along the Silk Road to Persia. There are two main varieties:  clingstone and freestone.  As the name suggests, the stone is easily removed with the freestone varieties, but the flesh sticks to the stone with the clingstone.  They also come in two different colors:  white or yellow flesh.  The white flesh varieties are sweeter and less acidic than their yellow counterparts.

Buying and Storing
The peach season lasts from late spring through summer. When buying look for fruit that is firm and plump and feels heavy for its size.  The fruit should have a smooth, velvety skin with no green patches. To check for ripeness, gently press your thumb along the seam.  It should give slightly without being too soft with a sweet, spicy fragrance.  Ripen at room temperature either in a fruit bowl or in a brown paper bag out of direct sunlight.  When ripe, the fruit will turn a rich yellow color at the stem.  Once ripe, store in the crisper section of your refrigerator in an unsealed bag for up to five days.
Preparation
To prepare simply wash in cold running water, then chop in half and remove the pit.  There is no need to peel the skin if you are adding them to smoothies.   Have too many peaches? Then freeze those you don’t need and you will always have frozen fruit ready to use in your smoothies.
Peach Nutrition
Peaches are rich in a range of nutrients as well as being low in calories, cholesterol-free and high in fiber.   In fact a medium-sized peach contains only 39 calories, far fewer than apples or pears of the same size.  Peaches are packed full of vitamins, including Vitamin A, beta-carotene and vitamin C.  In fact, just half a cup of fresh peaches will give you 10% of your recommended daily intake of vitamin C.  They are also a good source of vitamin E, vitamin D, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B3, vitamin B6, folate and pantothenic acid, as well as being a rich source of minerals such as calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron, manganese, phosphorous, zinc and copper.
