Banana Breakfast Smoothie for a Healthy Wake-up Call

Bananas are one of the most popular and commonly eaten fruits today.  Tasty, inexpensive and with their own built-in carry case, what’s not to like out them.  They make the perfect snack and can be eaten on the run.By combining them with a few other ingredients, the humble banana can be turned into the most amazing and delicious breakfast.  By adding some rolled oats, yogurt, honey, berries or stone fruits to your blender along with your banana, a wonderfully creamy banana breakfast smoothie is created, providing you with all the nutrients you need to carry you through the day.  Basically whatever you throw onto your muesli can be blitzed together in your blender.The nutritional benefits of bananas cannot be overstated.  Although bananas are sweet, containing 14-15 grams of sugar, they are rated low on the glycemic index (GI).  This is because of their fiber content.  Fiber slows down digestion.  So by keeping the rate of digestion regulated, there is no sugar rush.  The rate of conversion of carbohydrates to simple sugars and the subsequent absorption of those sugars is controlled, thus moderating the impact on our blood sugar levels.  Bananas are also known for their high levels of potassium, known to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.  As well, bananas are also a healthy source of vitamin B6, vitamin C and various antioxidants and phytonutrients.  

Note:  I would recommend using frozen bananas for these recipes.  You will get a much creamier result.

Spiced Oats Banana Breakfast Smoothie

Ingredients 1 frozen banana½ cup vanilla yogurt½ cup rolled oats2 cups almond milk1 teaspoon vanilla extract1 teaspoon ground cinnamonHow to MakePlace the frozen banana, vanilla yogurt, rolled oats, almond milk, vanilla extract and ground cinnamon into your blender and process until a smooth consistency.Pour into your favorite glass and enjoy.

Almond Mint Banana Smoothie

Ingredients2 frozen bananas½ cup rolled oats1 tablespoon almond butter½ cup brewed and chilled mint tea1 cup almond milk1 teaspoon nutmeg1 teaspoon vanilla extract6 – 8 mint leavesHow to MakeAdd the rolled oats to your blender and pulse until powdery.  Then add the frozen bananas, almond butter, mint tea, almond milk, nutmeg, vanilla extract and mint leaves and continue blending until smooth and creamy.This makes one large glass.

Peachy Banana Smoothie

Ingredients½ cup rolled oats1 frozen banana1 peach½ cup vanilla yogurt½ cup orange juice½ cup almond milkHow to MakeAdd the rolled oats to the blender first and process until fine.  Then add the frozen banana, chopped peach, vanilla yogurt, orange juice and almond milk. Blend until thick and creamy.Pour into 2 glasses.

Banana Strawberry Peanut Butter Smoothie

Ingredients1 frozen banana1 cup frozen strawberries½ cup vanilla yogurt1 cup almond milk1 tablespoon peanut butterHow to MakeBlend together the frozen banana, strawberries, vanilla yogurt, almond milk and peanut butter until creamy and thick.Serve immediately.
